These days pickles and their jars can be a lot of things: pretty, quirky, homespun, handsome, and of course, even hipster, so allow me to introduce you to my March Pickle of the Month: Sucker Punch Pickles. These pugilist pickle packing jars have it ALL!
Let's start on the outside and work our way in. Look at that beautiful label. It should be no surprise to learn that the creator of these pickles is also an illustrator and designed the label. This is definitely a jar that would grab MY attention and force me to buy it. Nicely done, David van Alphen. But do they taste as good as they look?
My jar of Sucker Punch Pickles were thick cut slices (I see them available as whole dills on their site) and I had them nice and cold before I ate them (not sure how I managed the restraint to do that...) which gave them a really big crunch. At first you might mistake these for a traditional kosher deli style pickles and that is all fine and well, but wait for it...take another bite and oh, hey, there's garlic, peppercorns, a delicious salty brine, chili pepper spice and something wonderful that I want to describe as clove but I'm not sure what it is! It all combines and hits you, yes, like a sucker punch-except you keep going back for more, more, more!
Yep-they taste just as good as they look which of course means my jar didn't last too many rounds in the ring. I knocked 'em out pretty early. I even drank all the juice and then ate all of the garlic. I'm a pickle killer.
If you're interested in Sucker Punch Pickles, I highly recommend you check out their website, learn about the pickle packing pugilist on the label and learn that this pickle master also makes his own bloody mary mix, spice blend and ketchup too! I really like that he also shows you a side by side comparison of his ingredients labels with those of Vlassic and Heinz. You'll be surprised at the difference and appreciative of people like David and other picklers who are providing the likes of me and you with quality food and yes, pickles and ketchup are 2 of my most basic food groups!
